Pic des Rouges and Mont Rouch (4)

At last a day off and good weather! I haven't been in the mountains for months so I was keen stretch the legs.

I decided to make a walk to some rarely visited peaks on the frontier, some of which I haven't been up, then finish with another ascent of Mont Rouch.

I started from Mines d'Anglade above Salau (1250m). At first I headed steeply towards the col de Crusous as if I was going to climb Cap de Ruhos, but crossed over a rocky spine into the secret valley of Fontaret.
Part of the long fin of rock which isolates Fontaret from the neighbouring valley

From here I made a rising traverse skirting under the north ridge of Tuc de Pis Noir then climbing steeply to eventually reach a little peak called Tuc de Lias (2268m). A gentler ascent put me on the frontier at Pas de la banque de Lauret (2461m).
Pic de Mariola and Lago de Riveralta on the Spanish side of the ridge

The frontier ridge is very narrow for a long way in both directions with a fair bit of exposure particularly to the Spanish side. I turned right heading for the very distant Mont Rouch. The ridge goes over many tops and switchbacks (including points 2459m, 2529m, Pic des Rouges 2644m and point 2660m) before finally reaching the summit of Mont Rouch (2868m).
Looking back along the ridge from Pic des Rouges, I joined the ridge
just after the high peak on the right (Pic de Montareing 2661m)

Looking from the same point in the other direction towards Mont Rouch

The very last section of ridge to the summit was exhausting as it was hot and I was tired and hungry. It had taken 5 hrs.

Looking back up at the foresummit of Mont Rouch on the descent

After a quick lunch I began the descent. It's a long and very steep knee jarring descent of about 1800m and every time I do it, the narrow and vague path seems to be in worse condition. As I had tired legs I had to be careful as the going was slippery in the afternoon humidity. 2 hrs 45 brought me to the piste which goes to the Port de Salau and the first other people I'd seen all day. Alun and Breezy are away so I continued past their barn and pushed on back to the car. The last few kilometers on the tarmac up to the mine were irritating, but couldn't distract from a great day out. 8200ft (2500m) of height gain.

Beautiful photos. Sounds like a great hike. Exhausting, but great nonetheless.

Does the Tour de France ever pass by any town close to where you live? I think they spent at least four days in the Pyrenees this year.

The Tour usually passes within a couple of miles of Quélébu. Col du Port, Port de Lers, Col d'Agnes, Col de Portel and Col de la Core are all very close and least one of them features in the tour every year.
