Pic de Seron (5)

Yesterday a walk in the mountains. Sandrine, Ben, Ian and I set off for Pic de Seron. We started out on the long walk in from Prat Mataou (Guzet). It was very cold and misty and with 10-15 cm of fresh powder it took nearly 2 hours to reach Gerac.

Hier, une promenade aux montagnes. Sandrine, Ben, Ian et Moi avons attaqué le Pic de Seron. Nous avons commencé dans l'approche longue de Prat Mataou (guzet). Il fait froid et brouillard et avec 10-15cm de fraiche ca prends 2 heures à atteindre Gerac.

From there we made directly for the col between Pic de Gerac and Pic de Seron, to then follow the NNE ridge to the summit.

De la nous sommes monté en direct du col entre Pic de Gerac et Pic de Seron, afin suivre la crête NNE au sommet.
We soon changed to crampons and the going was often awkward with the fresh blanket of snow hiding the rocky terrain beneath. At last the clouds cleared to reveal the fantastic views at a little after noon. We'd started late and with time running out, we left our sacks at 2100m to push for the col and the summit.

Nous avons porté des crampons et la route etait peu commode avec la neige sur les roches verglacés. Enfin les eclaircies sont arrivé avec les belles vues. Nous sommes parti tardif donc nous avons laissé vos sacs à 2100m afin monter plus vite au col et le sommet.

At 2200m we were at last in the sun and able to feel some warmth. We pressed on to the col then climbed up past the first gendarme for views to the frozen Etang d'Aube far below our position at about 2400m, but we knew we had run out of time to make the summit and get back before dark.

À 2200m nous étions au soliel, enfin la chaleur! Tôt le col, puis après la premiere gendarme, la vue vers Etang d'Aube loin en dessous nous à 2400m. Malheuresment nous avons manqué le temps d'atteindre le sommet et retour avant la nuit.
A grand day out nevertheless and back in time for a lovely evening of desserts with Anne-France, Magnus and Danni at La Trappe.

Néanmoins une belle journée, et j'ai rentré pour une soirée des desserts avec Anne-France, Magnus et Danni à La Trappe.

Plastering

I finally did the plastering at Pont de la Taule this morning and as is often the way with something you've been putting off for a long time, it turned out to be not so bad after all.

Enfin j'ai terminé le plâitre/enduits à Pont de la Taule.

The weather is grey and cold at the moment with rain and snow showers, but I went for a short walk in the woods this afternoon anyway.

Aujourd'hui il etait gris et froid avec des averses de pluie et neige, néanmoins j'ai fais une petite promenade dans le fôret.
There are quite a few abandoned barns deep in the forest, in various states of repair - it was once arable land, probably only 50 years ago. I found some 'hedgehog of the woods' mushrooms, a nice treat for tea.

Il y a plusiers granges abandonées cacher dans le bois, en epoque c'etait toute prairie - peut être il y a seulement 50 ans. J'ai trouvé des champignons (pieds de moutons) pour mon repas, quelle surprise en Janvier!

Mostly farmwork

New Year

New Years day I was fairly hungover after a drinking game at J and E's on New Years eve. I spent most of NYD making about 5 kgs of sausages and 3 kgs of saucisson sec which are now drying the barn.

Le premier Janvier j'ai la gueule de bois aprés un jeu de boire à chez Justin et Emily. J'ai pris toute la journée faisant les saucisses et les saucission sec.

I also made a start on carding the sheep fleeces ready for some felt making later in the year. It's going to take a long time to card it all.

Aussi j'ai commencé de carder la laine avant faire le feutre. il prends beaucoup des temps.

Warm, very warm.

I fenced the field in front of the house this morning in bright, sunny and very warm weather (low 20's in the sun).

Mid afternoon I collected half a pig from Justin (part payment for the carpentry works at his house last spring). Two years ago I butchered my first pig...it took days to process all the meat, today a little over two hours and it's all done except the sausages! Last time I made some bacon but it wasn't a great success, I'm having another go using the brine method rather than salting.

Le matin j'ai cloturé le pré devant chez moi en plein soliel (24 dégrées). L'après-midi j'ai cherché un demi cochon de Justin. Il y a deux ans j'ai coupé mon premier cochon...ca prends plusier jours, aujourd'ui ca prends deux heures moins les saucisses! Cette année j'essaie des poitrines dans saumure.

Rupert is in love with unimogs, this very nice one lives near the Col de Pause.

Pic des Aymesses and Pic de Cour Vic

Yesterday I finally finished the last few jobs on the staircase and Rupert and I loaded it into his van for transportation back to the UK.

Hier l'escalier etait terminer enfin et Rupert et moi avons chargé son camion afin l'importer a Angleterre.

Today we went for a day in the mountains on snowshoes with Emily. We managed to drive all the way up to the Col de Pause (though I slid the car in a deep snow filled gulley and we had to dig it out).

Aujourd'hui nous prenions une journée aux montagnes en raquettes avec Emily. nous avons reussi de conduire jusqu'au Col de Pause (mais j'ai glissé ma voiture dans un goute à côté du chemin).
From the Col we climbed up to Pic de Cour Vic (2119m) in rain and wind for amazing views of Mont Valier.

Du Col nous sommes monté au Pic de Cour Vic (2119m) dans la pluie et vent afin gagner les belles vues de Mont Valier.
We dug a little snow ledge out of the wind for an early lunch, then the sun came out and the weather improved for the rest of the day.

J'ai creusé une canapé de neige et nous avons cassé croute. Le soliel commence et il fait beau désormais.

We made a circuitous walk by picking up Pic des Aymesses (2036m) from the Col de Courbe on the way back. A lovely day in the mountains.

Nous avons fais une boucle avec l'ascension de Pic des Aymesses (2036m) depuis Col de Courbe.

So far it's been a very poor winter for snow, unless things turn around in the next few weeks it could be worse than 2005! There's enough snow to ski above 1800m (just) but it's worked by the wind and difficult skiing.

Jusqu' à présent c'etait un hiver pauvre pour la neige. Si il y n'a pas de la neige avant deux semaines ce sera plus terrible que 2005!

Xmas ski

It's traditional for me to go for a ski at Guzet on xmas day. Yesterday was rainy and warm and so far this winter has been poor for snow in the Pyrenees...it was looking doubtful. Overnight a cold front pushed through and we had a little snow (5-10cm) on the mountains. Guzet managed to open its main piste and one lift but we decided to head for Ax-les-Thermes which had more snow. The skiing wasn't bad in fact and in the afternoon we got a few views above the clouds.

C'est une tradition de faire de ski à Guzet à Nöel. Hier etait pluvieux et cette année etait pauvre pour la neige ici...c'etait incertain. Dans la nuit un perturbation est arrivé avec 5-10cm de neige aux montagnes. Guzet a reussi de ouvrir une piste mais Ax-les-Thermes a eu plus de neige. Un jour de ski pas mal et à l'après-midi un belle vue au dessus les nuages.

Valier in the clouds

I've always fancied wandering up this valley, so Rupert, Jason and I set off at 11.00 today for a wander. The weather soon detiorated but we pressed on through the rain all the way to the Cabane d'Aula. Still quite a lot (melting) ice and a tricky crossing of a semi-frozen stream on the way up to the upper cirque. 5hrs for the round trip with 900m of ascent.

J'ai eu l'envie de visister cet vallon depuis quelques années, donc Rupert, Jason et moi partons à onze heures pour un petit rando. Le temps se gâte mais nous persistent jusqu'au la cavbane d'Aula. Beaucoup de glace (fondant) encore et un traverse délicate d'un ruisseau, demi gélé. 5 heures AR avec 900m dénivilée.

Cold

Getting colder and colder here, -8 already today.

il fait de plus en plus froid, -8 deja aujourd'hui.

Last night I headed over to Donna's in Tarascon for dinner via Justin and Emily's. Crossing the Col de Port at 2.00am in the 'artic' conditions was exciting but we took it slow and steady and it passed without a problem. Earlier in the evening we passed quite a few people trying to cross without a 4x4 or chains...they didn't make it.

Nuit dernier je suis parti à chez Donna dans Tarascon vers chez Justin et Emily. Traversant le col du Port à 2 heures du matin dans les conditiones "artique" etais impressionante mais nous avons avancé lentement sans problems. Plus tôt nous avons passé les types qui ont essayé de traversé le col sans 4x4 ou chaines...ils n'ont' pas reussi.

Ian's new chainsaw has arrived and he was eager to fell an apple tree a neighbour had offered him for his woodturning - despite the subzero temperatures and snow. So this afternoon I went over to give him some chainsaw instruction and a crash course in tree felling. As it happened, the apple tree was a difficult proposition - old, slightly rotten, multi-stemmed and with a very uneven canopy, so I felled it. Ian got his practical experience de-limbing.

La tronçonneuse de Ian est arrivé et il a eu l'envie d'abbattre un pommier pour son tournant de bois, malgre le temps moins zero et la neige. Donc, cette apres midi je suis arrivé de lui donner un leçon. Le pommier etais un proposition difficile - vieux, pourrais, avec plusiers troncs, donc je l'ai abbattu.

Still very cold here and still plugging away at the staircase. Should be almost done when Rupert arrives on Saturday.

Très froid encore et j'ai continué de travailler sur l'escalier. Il sera presque finir quand Rupert arrive le Samedi.

I've been doing quite a bit of butchering and meat joint preparation since moving to France and I must say I'm getting rather good at it now - even if I say so myself!

Je faisais beaucoup de boucherie depuis je suis arrivé en France et je dis que mon niveau de competance est amèlioant.

More light snow

The cold weather and light snow continues, though the sheep don't seem to mind.
Le grand froid et la neige continuent, mais les moutons n'ont pas gené.

Snow

Spoke too soon...sub-zero and light snow all day today (only a dusting though). Hunting yesterday was cold, but today I've been working in the workshop (which is warm) continuing with the staircase.

J'ai dit trop vite...moins zero et la neige legère toute la journée. À la chasse hier il a fais froid mais aujourd'hui je travaillais dans l'atelier (chaud enfin) sur l'escalier.

Weather

After several weeks of warm sunny weather, temperatures are beginning to drop, with a couple of weeks of much colder weather forecast starting from the weekend...alas not much snow on the horizon yet.

Après quelques semaines de temps doux, la temperature commence de tomber, avec deux semaines de froides attendant...malheuresment pas beaucoup de la neige.

Router problem

Having finished half the new fencing and with the oak finally here, today I made start on Rupert's stair. I had only routed out the strings for three of the treads when the brand new router cutter threw one of it's TCT teeth, damaging the stair template, but fortunately not the oak!

Avoir finir un moitie de la clôture et avec le bois ici enfin, aujourd'hui j'ai commencè de fabriquer l'escalier pour Rupert. Mais après seulement trois pas un problème technique.
It's an expensive bit (about £60) so I called up the manufacturer "Trend UK" who also make the stair template. They were very apologetic and instantly offered to replace both parts, no questions asked, and are despatching them to me by courier tonight. Excellent service.

Sanglier

Hunting yesterday and although I saw some red deer we don't have the right to hunt them in our commune. We did get a 116kg boar though, so there's some more meat heading for the freezer.

Today I was making fence posts from the felled chestnut trees down near the barn and starting to clear and fence the field in front of the house which I will be using next year.

A metre or so of snow at 2000m but too 'soupy' to ski on today - a chance on Tuesday if the temperatures dip enough on Monday night.

J'ai chassé hier, j'ai vu les cerfs, mais malheuresment nous n'avons pas le droit de les chassé dans notre commune. Nous avons tiré un sanglier de 116kg, donc il y a de la viande au congèlateur.

Aujourd'hui j'ai fait les piquets de la chataignier à côté de la grange et j'ai commencé de nettoyer et clôturé le parc devant chez moi.

Un metre de la neige à 2000m mais 'de la soupe' donc pas du ski aujourd'hui - mais peut-être le Mardi si il fait froid le Lundi soir.

Crap weather

Mostly wet and windy since the last post - still snowing in the mountains but crappy here. I have been busying myself indoors finishing various drawing and design projects whilst I wait for the timber for a staircase to arrive.

De la pluie et du vent depuis le dernier post - il neige encore dans les montagnes mais il est merde ici. Je me suis occupé dedans avec des projects de dessine lorsque j'attend pour le livraison de bois pour une escalier.

Remington Model Seven - Mark II

The new laminated stock I've been working on is now in the long slow process of final finishing (tung/linseed oil mix). One coat a week for a month, one coat a month for a year...of course I can use it in the meantime! It's amazing how the new stock has changed the feel and balance of the rifle (for the better) and puts my eye instantly behind the scope when I shoulder it.

La neuve crosse laminée que j'ai travaillé est en cours de finition (une mélange de huile de lin et tung). Une couche par semaine pendant un mois, et puis une couche par mois pendant un an...biensûr je peut utiliser pendant le traitment! Il est incroyable la difference que la neuve crosse a fait, la équilibre et mon oeil est derrière la lunette quand j'epaule la carabine.

After a few weeks of sunny balmy weather, things are beginning to change today, even a chance of snow here on Monday night.

Après deux semaines de temps doux, ça change aujourd'hui, peut être la neige Lundi soir.

On Friday I collected the ram "Rambo". He was instantly mobbed by the sheep who had never seen a "male" sheep before. After some getting to know you stuff, he's busy doing what Rams do.

Le vendredi j'ai cherché le belier qui s'appelle "Rambo". Il etais bondir sur par les brebis qui n'ont jamais vu un male mouton avant. Après des "connaissance", il est occupée avec ton travail!

Three good sized boar hunting on Saturday (not shot by me though). By the end of the day I was feeling like I was going down with flu - but I have had very inflamed sinuses for the last week because of all the dust and lime mortar mixing at Pont de la Taule, anyhow decided to stay in the warm on Sunday just in case. I started work on the laminated stock for my rifle (the blank for which finally arrived a few days ago, 7 months after I ordered it!). A couple of days of shaping later and it's ready for the action to be glass bedded. Several weeks of sanding and finishing will follow that.

Trois beau sangliers à la chasse le Samedi. À la fin de la journée je sentais que j'ai attrappé la grippe - mais mes sinuses sont deja inflammées (la pousière et le chaux à Pont de la Taule) donc j'ai décidé de reste à la maison le Dimanche. J'ai commencé le travaux sur la crosse laminée pour ma carabine (elle sont arrivé il y a quelques jours sept mois depuis j'ai commandé!) Après quelques jours elle est prêt pour la sous couche en resin. Quelques jours de poncée et finition de suivre.

Trois Seigneurs

A walk up Pic des Trois Seigneurs today with Ben. He moved here a couple of months ago and is in the process of buying a small farm near Foix. Still quite a lot of snow on the East facing slopes above the Etang d'Arbu (waist deep in places) and snowshoes would have been useful. Return via the Pic de Barrès and Pic de Fontanette which are mostly clear of snow.

Une rando à Pic des Trois Seigneurs avec Ben aujourd'hui. Il a démenagé ici il y a deux mois et il achete une petite ferme proche de Foix. Il y a encore beaucoup de neige sur les versants Est au dessus Etang d'Arbu (à la taille dans endroits) et les raquettes seraient utiles. Retour vers Pic de Barrès et Pic de Fontanette qui sont dégagé.

Tractor day

Another balmy hot day without a cloud in the sky. People here say that the weather on the 16th Nov is an indication of the coming winter...well today it was 34 degrees in the sun...glad I got a ski in last week.

Il fait chaud encore, aucune nauges. Ici on dit que le méteo pendant le 16 Novembre prédire le méteo pour l'hiver suivant...alors 34 dégrées au soliel aujourd'hui...heuresment que j'ai fait du ski semaine dernière.

This morning I serviced the brakes on the tractor which have always seemed a bit dodgy. The brakes shoes on the first wheel were perfect but when I looked inside the second brake drum it was packed with grease!! Took a while to clean it all out but not surprisingly the brakes are fine now.

Ce matin j'ai entretenu les freins sur mon tracteur ils ont été tourjours maigre. Les machoires de frein sur le première roue etais bons, mais le deuxième etais plein avec de la graisse!! Difficile de nettoyer mais maintenant ça marche bien.

Then several other tractors turned up - the son of La Pancharde to cut the field in front of the house, M Larcher to cut the grass beside the house and then Le Suisse on his two wheel tractor with ride on trailer to cut down some trees for John.

Puis plusiers tracteurs ont arrivé - le fils de La Panchard afin tondre le pr´ devant chez moi, M Larcher afin tondre ta parcelle à côté de chez moi, et en fin Le Suisse sur ton tracteur de deux roues afin d'abattre les arbres de John.

In the afternoon, I fitted some doors to the barn and cut Mini's ingrowing horn. Then I washed the fleeces from the sheep shearing last spring - they'll need to be carded during the winter.

L'après-midi, J'ai pendu les portes à la grange et couper la corne de Mini. Puis j'ai lavé les toisons de mes brebis que j'ai tondu en printemps.

Hunting

5 wild boar shot today! But all is not well in the hunting club and no sooner had the wild boar arrived at the hunting lodge than they were expelled with those who shot them. Hopefully it's a storm that'll blow over.
