Cooking with Sarriette

I found the herb Sarriette in the supermarket the other day. In the UK we call this herb Summer Savory, not a commonly used herb though Winter Savory a close relative, is the herb that some people from the UK may have heard of . In flavour it's like a mild form of sage ( a herb the French don't seem to use much). Tonight I cooked some duck hearts with garlic, shallots, cream and sarriette - served with spinach and roast potatoes...a thumbs up from me!

J'ai trouvé l'herbe qui s'appelle "sarriette" au supermarché. En anglais c'est "Summer Savory", pas bien connu, mais "Wintyer Savory" est presque le même chose. Le gôut est comme sauge mais plus doux. Ce soir j'ai mangé des coeur du canard avec d'aile, échalots, crême fraiche, et sarriette - avec epinards et pomme de terre sauté....miam.

Cooler

A strange day, sometimes hot and sunny, sometimes raining but always with a strong cold wind - snow is coming!

Quelle journée, quelques fois il fait chaud en pleine soliel, autres fois il pleut, mais tousjours avec le vent froid - la neige arrivera!

Spring forward, Fall back.

Managed to put the clocks back instead of forward today so spent most of it 2 hours adrift.

En erreur j'ai retardé ma montre une heure ce matin, donc j'etais deux heures détacher!

More fencing this morning, then a walk in the afternoon, a circuit around Joubac. This time I went in the clockwise direction (Quélébu, Aleu, le Talapent, Bois de Jou, Le Taus, La Bordasse, Biech, Quélébu) which proved to be more difficult than my normal anti-clockwise trip. Difficult route finding and crossing the numerous rocky ridges was more treacherous in this direction. The vague deer trail in the precipitous woodlands I normally follow was hidden below half a metre of leaves - concealing roots, branches and rocks and very slippery. My choice of apparel - shorts, though ideally suited to the climatic conditions wasn't great for the flora encountered - bramble, broom, branch and thorn, my calves are raw! I ended up ascending the North/North West ridge of Le Taus/Joubac rather than continuing to Coumes. 800m of ascent, 9km and 3 1/2 hours of walking.

J'ai fais les clôtures encore le matin. L'après-midi j'ai fait une promenade au tour de Joubac. Cette fois dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d'une montre (Quélébu, Aleu, le Talapent, Bois de Jou, Le Taus, La Bordasse, Biech, Quélébu) plus difficile que l'autre sens. C'etait difficile de trouver la route, et les arêtes qu'on a dû traversé être plus dangereux. La trace de chevreuil que je suis dans le forêt précipiteuse, etait sous 50cm des feuilles - les racines, branches et cailloux etaient cacher et la voie glissante. Les vêtements que j'ai choisi (shorts) être bien pour les conditiones méteo, mais pas pour la végétation - les ronces, les gênet, les branches et les aiguilles. Enfin je monté l'arête Nord/Nord-Ouest de Le Taus/Joubac plutôt que faire la continuation jusqu'au Coumes. 800m dénivilée, 9 km et 3,5 heures de marcher.

Still born

It is still 3-4 weeks before the lambs are due but last night/early this morning Ziggy gave birth to a single premature lamb. Unfortunately it was dead by the time I found it, it was probably still born or it perished shortly after being born. Not a good start to lambing. In fact I hadn't thought that Ziggy was in lamb at all as she's only a year old.

Il est encore 3-4 semaines avant que les agneaux sont dues, mais la nuit dernière et au début de ce matin, Ziggy a donné naissance à un agneau prématuré. Malheureusement, il était mort au moment où je l'ai trouvé, il était probablement né mort ou elle a péri peu de temps après sa naissance. Pas un bon début d'agnelage. En fait, je n'avais pas pensé que Ziggy était avec agneau du tout comme elle n'a que un an.

This might just look like any old field to the untrained eye, but it's grassland that has been harrowed for the first time in decades, maybe ever! To me it looks incredibly neat.

Cela pourrait simplement ressembler à n'importe quel champ pour un œil non averti, mais il est des prairies qui a été ratisser avec une hearse pour la première fois depuis des décennies, peut-être jamais!Pour moi, ça ressemble incroyablement soignée.

Never, ever get agricultural implements delivered.

After the fiasco of getting my tractor delivered from Italy to France, I thought I'd try getting a chain harrow delivered from the UK. Despatched on the 9th March it went with interparcel.com who actually use FedEx to do the couriering. It then sat in Frankfurt for 10 days until I started asking questions...apparently the outer packaging was damaged - but no-one actually thought to do anything about it. Duly prompted, the packaging was repaired and the harrow was back on it's way via Paris and Toulouse.

Apparently it was delivered and signed for yesterday morning...only not to the correct address or signed for by the correct person. The package even had my contact phone numbers on it.

I am now trying to trace the harrow's whereabouts. Only I have to talk to interparcel, and they talk to FedEx, who probably talk to another courier.

Joubac

Aleu from the summit

A wander up Joubac (1069m) this morning. Two weeks of hot south winds have devastated the snow - hopes of ski touring until mid-May look very optimistic.

Flowers

Another beautiful day...shorts and T-shirt all day and mostly working in the fields which are blue with violets. In the evening a wander through the woods which are carpeted in lungwort, oxlip and blue and white hepatica (pictured above in order).

Encore une belle journée ... short et T-shirt toute la journée et travaillant surtout dans les domaines qui sont bleus de violettes. Dans la soirée, je balade dans les bois qui sont tapissées avec Pulmonaria Officinalis, Primula Elatior et Hepatica Nobilis (bleu et blanc). Photo ci-dessus dans l'ordre.

Squeezing spots

Low-cloud and drizzly this morning so I decided to take Mini to the vet. She's had an abscess on the side of her face (the size of a big marble) for about a week which wasn't getting any better. The usual shenanigans getting her into the trailer though a hastily built ramp (out of an old door) seemed to help. The sweet lady vet jabbed a syringe needle into it, then squeezed out the puss, whilst I restrained Mini. Apparently it was between the muscle and the skin so nothing to be worried about - basically a big sheep boil! Apparently it'll need the same treatment tomorrow which is down to me!

Nuageuse et pluvieux, ce matin, j'ai donc décidé de prendre Mini chez le vétérinaire. Elle a eu un abcès sur le côté de son visage pendant environ une semaine, ce qui se faisait pas mieux. Les manigances d'habitude l'emmener dans la remorque si une rampe construites à la hâte (sur une vieille porte) semble aider. La belle vétérinaire enfonça une aiguille de seringue dans le, puis évincés la gueule, tandis que j'ai retenu Mini. Apparemment, il a été entre le muscle et la peau, donc rien de s'inquiéter - essentiellement grand bouton de mouton! Il faudra le même traitement de demain qui est un boulou pour moi!

Back at base the weather improved and I set to repairing fences in Paul's field and then dismantling the chicken run (which I'll re-erect nearer the house later) and building fences to replace it.

Retour à chez-moi et la météo s'est améliorée et je me mis à la réparation des clôtures dans le domaine de Paul, puis démonter les poulailler (qui je vais remettre en place près de la maison plus tard) et la construction des clôtures pour le remplacer.

My old ski's which have started to de-laminate adjacent to the edges, where given a severe overhaul, they'll probably make another season so I'll gift them to Sandrine who is desperate to try ski-touring but doesn't have the equipment.

Mes skis anciens, qui ont commencé à de-stratifié adjacentes aux bords, ont fait de l'entretiens, ils vont probablement faire une autre saison, donc je vais les offrir à Sandrine, qui est désespéré d'essayer le ski de randonnée, mais n'a pas le équipement.

Planning for next winter

Whilst the weather is warm and dry I decided to move next winter's firewood up from field 1 to the wood shed. 8 trailer loads and 10 hours later all is neatly stacked. I'll probably move a little more tomorrow.

Lorsque le temps fait chaud et sec, j'ai décidé de deplacer le bois de chauffage de pre numéro 1 à le gar de bois. 8 rémorques et 10 heures plustard toute sont empilé.

Still balmy - evening pictures

The hot weather continues - so no skiing. I spent the day finishing off Annie's shutters. Re-pointing around the window, cleaning the window surround and varnishing it, then hanging the shutters.

Le chaleur encore - donc pas de ski. Aujourd'hui j'ai fini le volets d'Annie. J'ai fait les joints au tour de la fenêtre, nettoyer et vernir l'encadrement et accrocher les volets.

I also walked all the field perimeters, picking up the branches brought down in the winds and generally tidying up.

J'ai promenadé les perimeters des prés et ramassé les petites branches qui sont tombés par le vent.

Strawberries

Another lovely day today, so I spent the morning digging over the vegetable patches which was hard work. I dug up the strawberry plants from last year, split them and replanted them in the new small vegetable garden beside the workshop where they'll get lots of sun, together with some sage Alun and Breezy gave me last year and some rosemary.

Le beau temps encore, donc j'ai donné un coup de bêche aux potagers. J'ai enlevé les fraisiers de l'année dernier et les replanter dans un nouveau plot, ou elles recevront plus de soliel. J'ai planté aussi de la romarin et de la sauge, donnez-moi par Alun et Breezy l'année dernier.

In the afternoon a trip to Ax-les-Thermes birthday shopping for skis!

L'apres-midi un visit à l'Ax-les-thermes afin choisir un cadeau d'anniversaire.

Sickle bar

Yesterday I drove to Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the Gers to collect a sickle bar mower for the tractor. It's about 35 years old but appears in good working order. I spent most of today 'fettling' with it to make sure it all works. It's been beautiful the last few days - the snow is melting and I've been in a t-shirt for the first time this year.

Hier je suis allé à Villeneuve-sur-Lot dans le Gers afin chercher une barre de coup pour mon tracteur. Elle a trente-cinq ans mais elle marche. Aujourd'hui j'ai pris toute la journée la tourner. Il fait beau les derniers jours - la neige fond et j'ai porté un tee-shirt pour la premier fois.

Pic de Montgarié (ski)

I had planned to do a ski tour this weekend up Pic de Montabone but the avalanche risque was too high on North facing slopes so Ben and I opted to head up from the Riberot valley towards the peaks around Tuc de la Messe. We climbed steeply out of the forest onto the mountainside through deep wet snow and although we had intended to stay in the Cabane de Taus, the weather was decidedly hot and the snow decidedly slushy and peeling off the slopes, so we stopped the night at Cabane d'Aouen instead. Amazing views to Pic de Barlonguere, Mail de Bulard, Pic des Tremuls and Mont Valier.

Once the sun was low in the sky the temperatures plummeted to about -10 degrees. The cabane has just two mattresses but unusually no chimney - fortunately we had carried up a 'mountain' of down clothing and food, so we ate and slept well.

Next morning everything was frozen hard and to begin with we resorted to carrying the skis and wearing crampons as the steep slopes were too hard to ski-up even with ski-crampons. As the gradient eased and the sun came out we could ski again. It was clear that the snow was going to be horrible to ski down on, as it had a thick crust (about 5cm thick) but was deep and soft underneath. At every turn your skis broke through the crust into the fluff underneath and got trapped. On reaching Cap de Lauses we decided to climb Pic de Montgarié as it would be a quick ascent, thus we could be down before the hot sun began to melt the snow and make skiing conditions worse. A direct ascent from the Col de Roc Plat put us on the summit ridge and thence the summit.

J'avais prévu de faire une randonnée à ski ce week-end jusqu'à Pic de Montabone mais le risque d'avalanche était trop élevée sur les versants exposés au nord, donc Ben et moi avons opté pour la tête de la vallée Ribérot vers les sommets autour de Tuc de la Messe. Nous sommes montés hors de la forêt à flanc de montagne dans la neige humide en profondeur et bien nous avions l'intention de rester dans le Cabane de Taus, le temps était chaud et la neige fondante et décoller des pentes, nous nous sommes arrêtés dans la nuit à la Cabane d'Aouen. Très belles vues au Pic de Barlonguère, Mail de Bulard, Pic des Tremuls et le Mont Valier. Lorsque le soleil était bas dans le ciel, les températures ont chuté jusqu'à environ -10 degrées. La cabane avais deux matelas, mais exceptionnellement pas de cheminée - heureusement nous portions une "montagne" de duvet des vêtements et nourriture, alors nous avons mangé et bien dormi. Le lendemain matin, tout était gelé et pour commencer nous avons eu recours à les crampons que sur les pentes escarpées ont été trop dur de chaussée, même avec le ski-crampons. Comme le gradient assouplies et le soleil est monté nous pourrions de chaussée encore. Il était clair que la neige allait être pénible à skier en descente, comme il avait une croûte épaisse (environ 5cm d'épaisseur) mais il a été profond et doux en dessous. A chaque virage vos skis cassé la croûte en entre dans les poudres dessous et a été piégé. En arrivant à Cap-de-Lauses nous avons décidé de monter Pic de Montgarié que ce serait une ascension rapide, et nous pourrions descendre avant le soleil a commencé à faire fondre la neige et de rendre les conditions de ski comme "porridge". Une ascension directe de la Plate Col Roc de nous mettre sur la crête du sommet et de là au sommet.

Still snowing

Skiing

After feeding the sheep with some corn and the last of the hay I made an early start for Guzet picking Ian up on the way. The fresh snow seemed a little heavier than we had hoped but there was plenty to go around and we were soon enjoying it. We were joined by Sandrine, Jason and Fi, though Emily was unable to make it. The snow continued for most of the day and although the visibility was very poor in the afternoon, we took to skiing through the trees (easier in the poor visibility) and found some great powder stashes in some new off-piste areas. A great days skiing was had by all.

Après J'ai donné la manger aux brébis je suis parti très tôt à Guzet avec Ian. La nouvelle neige etait un peu plus lourde que nous ésperions mais il y a beaucoup. Sandrine, Jason et Fi ont nous joint. Il neigeais touts la journée et malgre la brume dans l'après-midi nous avons trouvé les endroits avec la poudre bien légère hors piste. Un bon ski pour tous.

The high winds of last week have caused plenty of damage at Guzet. The chairlift up Freychet has chairs wrapped around the cable, which itself has become unhooked from several pylons. A large tower crane also blew over at the station.

Les vents forts de la semaine dernière a fait les degats à Guzet. La remontée méchanique de Freychet est décrochée et une grande grue est tombé.

Then after dropping Ian and Sandrine off at Castet d'Aleu, it was back to St Girons where I managed to find some hay and more corn for the sheep. They were looking hungry when I finally got home at 6.30 to feed them.

J'ai laissé Ian et Sandrine à Castet d'Aleu, puis je suis allé à St Girons ou j'ai trouvé du foin et de la mais pour les brébis. Elles ont faim quand j'ai rentré à 18.00.

Still snowing

Just about 40cm of snow so far, it hasn't let up yet. With the Rayburn lit all day I couldn't resist some baking (Orange & Apple Crumble and Toad in the hole).

Il y a à peu près 40cm de la neige ici et il neige encore. Avec la cuisinère allumée tout la journée, j'ai eu l'envie de cuisiner (crumble de orange et pomme et "toad in the hole").

Tomorrow is a ski day for sure but with only enough hay for the sheep for one more day, Wednesday will have to be a search for more supplies before ferrying Sarah from the airport to Emily's in the evening.

Demain le ski biensûr mais il y a seulement assez du foin pour les brebis d'un jour de plus, donc le Mercredi je chercherais la nourriture avant prendre Sarah à chez Emily de l'aeroport de Toulouse.

Snow

Preparing for snow.

While I was in the UK we had some very strong winds here at Quélébu and a couple of days of heavy rain. A few trees down, but otherwise no damage. It had been a glorious day when I arrived home yesterday evening and this morning dawned equally bright, without a cloud in the sky. But heavy snow is forecast for Monday and a cold wind has been blowing all day, bringing with it the clouds. The last load of hay is in from the barn, the house is stocked with wood and the Rayburn is lit. It's 3.00 in the afternoon and the first few snowflakes are falling. I rescued the saucisson sec from the barn before they freeze again.

Pendant que j'etais en Angleterre, il y a des vents fort ici à Quélébu et quelques jours de la pluie. Quelques arbres sont tombé, mais par ailleurs sans pertes. Il y avais les beaux temps hier et le matin aussi, un ciel sans les nuages. Mais on attends de la neige le Lundi et un vent froid souffle toute la journée. J'ai ramassé le dernier foin de la grange, chez moi est bien rempli avec des bois de chauffage et la cuisinère est allumé. Il est trois heures de l'après-midi et les premières flocons de neiges tombent.

UK

I have been in the UK for a couple of days to do some urgent maintenance on the shower in my flat in Bath. Had to replace the shower tray and some of the enclosing walls - more work than I expected but hopefully I'm on top of it now. Just some tiling, grouting and bit of joinery to do and all should be back in working order.

Je reste en Angleterre depuis quelques jours afin faire des entretiens de la douche dans mon appartement à Bath. J'ai besoin de remplacer le bac et des murs - plus de travaux que je pensais. Il y a des carrélages de monter et joints de faire.

Charcuterie

The ham from last summer and the first of the saucisson sec came out of the barn today for tasting. All good, though the saucisson could do with a bit longer (it's spent a few of its weeks frozen rather than maturing).

Le jambon de l'été dernier et les premieres saucisson sec sont arrivées pour la dégustation. Toutes sont bonnes, mais les saucisson ont besoin un peu plus de maturation.

A balmy day today with the continuing southerly breeze. I put the sheep down in Paul's field and mended a few fences, before pressing on with Annie's shutters. Hopefully I have time for another ski-tour before my trip to the UK.

Une journée douce avec le vent de Sud. J'ai mis les moutons dans le pré de Paul et j'ai réperé des clôtures avant j'ai avancé avec la fabrication des volets d'Annie. J'espere de faire un autre sortie de ski de rando avant je partirai d'Angleterre.

Pig slaughter

A trip over the Col de Port today to help John and Debs with their pig slaughter. I killed the pig then helped them with the sticking, blood collection and scraping (it was their first time). Justin arrived to help with the evisceration and I left to drop in on Emily and the twins.

J'ai traversé le Col de Port aujourd'hui afin aider John et Debs de tuer leurs cochon. J'ai fusilé le cochon, puis je les'ai aidé de ramasser le sang et dépoiler (ils ont débutants). Justin est arrivé pour l'éviscération donc je suis parti de visiter les jumelles et Emily.

I startled three red deer stags on the way down J and E's drive and a couple of does on the way back which I managed to photograph with my old camera which lives in the car.

J'ai lancé trois cerfs en l'approche de chez Emily et deux de plus en retour. J'ai reussi de photographer les deux avec mon vieux photo-appareil.

Crete de Balame (ski)

Set out a bit late this morning to do another short tour before Paul leaves. We got halfway to the start point when Paul realised he'd left his ARVA behind so we had to go back to collect it. We finally set off for the South face of Cap de Bouirex at 10.30 by which time the sun had come out and the snow was decided humid and sticking to our skins. We broke trail up to the last hairpin before the col where we found set of solo ski tracks.

Nous sommes partis tardif ce matin afin faire un court ski-rando avant Paul rentre à Angleterre. Nous étions à mi-chemin quand Paul a réalisé de Il a laissé ton ARVA à chez-moi. Nous sommes partis de la face Sud de Cap de Bouirex à 10.30 dans le temps deja chaud et la neige collante. Nous avons fait la trace jusqu'au le dernière lacet avant le Col de la Core ou nous avons trouvé un trace d'un seul skier.

The south face looked very windblown (though we saw a party of four making a ski descent) so we opted to follow the solo tracks for a lovely descent from a little peak at about 1750m on the Crete de Balame down to Le Goulet Granges 1230m.

La face Sud etait très ventée (bien que il y avais un partie de 4 skiers en descente) donc nous avons choisi de suivre la trace du skier seule et avons fait une belle descente du petit Pic à 1750m sur le Crête de Balame à Le Goulet Granges 1230m.

I thought I'd filmed the entire descent only to find out at the bottom that the video camera had failed to start!

Je pensais que j'aie filmer toutes la descente, mais au fin j'ai trouvé que le video-cam ne démarrer pas!

Probing for skis

It was snowing heavily here this morning so we decided to head over to Guzet. It was dumping it down all day, but visibility was very poor and the snow heavy. You had to ski it aggressively, but then you touched the hard ice underneath which is very cut up. Some good runs but a lot which were way too much hard work. Took a heavy fall on the off-piste adjacent to the black run "dome" and lost a ski. Took quite a bit of searching with the avalanche probe to find it. Snow depth on the hillside was 1m20cm.

Le matin il neigais fort ici, donc nous avons décidé de partir à Guzet. Malheuresment il y a la mauvaise visibilité et la neige lourde. Afin reussir, on a devu faire de ski avec aggression, mais comme ça on a touché la neige dur et très inégale en dessous. Quelques descentes belles, mais beaucoup qu' etaient trop de travail. J'ai tombé hors piste, à côté de la piste noire "dome" et j'ai perdu un ski. J'ai cherché longtemps avec ma sonde avant je l'ai trouvé. Profondeur de neige sur la pente est 1m20.

Tuc de la Coume (ski)

Although the dusting of snow forecast overnight above 1500m didn't materialise and this morning it was considerably warmer than we had hoped, we nevertheless got a nice ski tour done today.

La neige legère attendant nuit dernier n'arrive pas et ce matin il fait plus chaud que nous avons espèré, neanmoins nous avons fait un belle ski de rando.

Another trip to Pic des Lanes and Tuc de la Coume. The weather was glorious and the views fantastic.

The descent was fun on snow which was crusty but very skiable until about 1350m where it turned into wet, heavy, deep, yuk.

Une belle descente sur neige un peu cartonné mais agréable de skier jusqu'au 1350m, en dessous là, la neige molle.

Update

On Monday I collected Paul from the airport for 5 days of mountain activity. With the temperature hovering around -10 for the last week things were shaping up nicely. So on Tuesday we set off early for some ice climbing in the Ossese valley.

Lundi, j'ai cherché Paul de l'aéroport pour 5 jours d'activité de montagne. Avec une température oscillant autour de -10 pour la semaine dernière les choses ont été s'annonce bien. Donc, le mardi nous partons tôt pour l'escalade sur glace dans la vallée de Ossese.It quickly became apparent that things had changed overnight, the foehn wind was blowing, temperatures even in the steep sided valley were nearly in double figures. A huge cloud of spindrift boomed down the valley from an avalanche higher up when we were barely 100m from the car. Gingerly we pushed on but all around us we could hear the streams running - the freeze was over. We reached the Cascade Lastien and as we suspected there was very little ice left. A medium sized avalanche rumbled down a ravine opposite from the top of Pic de Soubirou, and we bid a hasty retreat.

Il est vite devenu évident que les choses avaient changé du jour au lendemain, le vent de Sud soufflait, les températures, même dans la vallée encaissée étaient à peu près à deux chiffres. Un énorme nuage de neige est descendu dans la vallée à partir d'une avalanche plus haut lorsque nous étions à 100 mètres de la voiture. Avec prudence nous avons avancé mais tout autour de nous, nous pouvions entendre les cours d'eau - le gel était terminée. Nous avons atteint le Lastien Cascade et comme nous l'avons douté qu'il y n'avait plus de la glace. Une avalanche de taille moyenne grondait établissant un ravin, en face du haut du Pic de Soubirou, et nous offre une retraite hâtive.

Paul - not sure about the black runs

Today we headed over to Guzet so that Paul could try out his new touring set-up. As it's half-term the place is packed but we had a good days skiing and Paul is very pleased with his new Black Diamond Kilowatt skis. Tomorrow a short tour if the weather behaves and more snow is forecast for Friday - so hopefully a decent day of powder skiing either Friday or Saturday.

Aujourd'hui, nous nous sommes dirigés vers Guzet sorte que Paul pouvait essayer son nouveau matos de ski rando. Comme elle est à mi-parcours il y a de la monde, mais nous avons eu une bonne journée de ski et Paul est très heureux avec son nouveaux skis de Black Diamond Kilowatt. Demain, un petit tour si le temps se comporte et plus de neige est prévue pour vendredi - alors j'espère un jour de décent de ski de poudreuse, soit vendredi ou samedi.

Rambo the ram has been poorly for the last 4 days with terrible scouring (diarrhoea). I gave him a good dose of de-worming drugs (although the ewes are regularly de-wormed I have no idea what treatments, if any, Rambo received before he arrived) and today he seems much better. The two remaining hens have been confined to the run and so far don't seem to have been harassed by the fox. Revenge will have to wait.

Rambo le bélier a été mal pour les 4 derniers jours avec de terribles diarrhée. Je lui ai donné une bonne dose de médicaments contre les vers intestinaux (bien que les brebis sont régulièrement vermifugés Je n'ai aucune idée de ce que les traitements, Rambo a reçu avant son arrivée) et aujourd'hui il a l'air beaucoup mieux. Les deux poules restantes ont été confinés à la course et à ce jour ne semble pas avoir été harcelés par le renard. Revenge devront attendre.

It looks like I may have to make a trip to the UK to carry out some urgent property repairs to the flat soon, not the best timing with snow still falling and hay running out.

Il semble que je mai ont à faire un voyage au Royaume Uni pour effectuer quelques réparations urgentes de propriété de l'appartement rapidement, pas le meilleur timing avec la neige tombait toujours et de foin à manquer.

During the snow storm yesterday a fox took two hens and my beautiful cockerell "Captain". I will be reaping a terrible, bloody and I hope swift revenge. With lambs on the way the fox will have to go.

Pendant la tempête de neige hier un renard a pris deux poules et mon beau coq "Captain". Je prendrai une épouvantable, ensanglanté et vite revenge. On attends des agnelles et le renard devra partir.

After feeding the sheep, giving them new bedding and replenishing the houses' wood supplies, I headed over to Guzet for possibly the best skiing of the winter so far. The high winds and heavy snow combined to dump several feet of fluffy light powder all over the resort...and it was virtually empty for much of the day! Despite my sore neck/throat (from Wednesday's whiplash) I skied the best I ever have and with the deep snow even really steep slopes (45 degrees for me) were a joy. Met up with Ian, Justin, Jason and Fi, but skied a lot of the day alone, it was nice to push myself down some tougher slopes whilst still skiing at my own pace.

Après avoir donner le manger et nouveau lits aux brebis, et avoir faire le restockage de bois du chauffage, je suis parti à Guzet pour la plus belle ski de cette hiver. Les vents forts et quantités de la neige importante ont combiné de mettre 50cm de poudreuse très légère sur tout la domaine...de plus il y a personne! Malgré mon cou (coup de lapin Mercredi) j'ai fait de ski le mielleur. Dans la neige profond même les pentes raide (45 degrées pour moi) etais aimiable. J'ai rencontré Ian, Justin, Jason et Fi, mais j'ai fait de ski souvent tout seule.

Got back to find the sheep had escaped (they get bored when there's snow everywhere). Fortunately they virtually come to my call now.

Blizzard

Another snow storm with strong winds swept in at 5am this morning - the rattling shutters woke me up and it's been dumping it down ever since.

Encore un tempête de neige avec du vent fort est arrivé à 5 heures du matin - les vibrations des volets me reveille et il a neigé depuis.

After feeding the sheep with some maize I eventually managed to get the tractor going (the battery needs replacing) and made a couple of runs to the barn for more hay, in case it becomes impassable. The 7 sheep are really getting through the hay this year, reckon I have about another two weeks worth left.

Après j'ai donné le manger (mais) aux brebris, j'ai reussi de démarrer le tracteur (il a besoin un nouvelle batterie) et ramener du foin de la grange avant la neige bouger le chemin. Les 7 moutons ont mangé beaucoup du foin cet hiver, il reste suffissent de deux semaines de plus.

Today my neck has been stiffening up all day, yesterday Fi crashed in front of me on an easy cat track and I was unable to avoid her and crashed too. Fi was fine, but I had quite a fall and a smack on the head with my ski and I think today I've got mild whiplash.

Aujourd'hui mon cou etait plus en plus corbatouré, hier Fi a tombé devant moi et je l'ai trébuché. Elle etais bien, mais moi j'ai chuté dur et un ski a frappé ma tête. j'ai coup de lapin!

First ski for 10 days!

After more than 36 hours of snow, Ian and I headed over to Guzet at lunchtime. There was plenty of snow but no visibility. We skied a couple of pistes 'blind' then decided to try Prat Mataou just in case there was some visibility there. Things were no better, but then we met Laurent from Oust. He kindly showed us some off piste routes down through the trees from Prat to Col de la Trappe. With the trees we had something to focus on and we made 4 good runs. Suddenly the clouds began to clear and out came the sun! We headed over to the main ski area as fast as we could - in the clearing haze all the off-piste areas suddenly looked immense and steep, and were relatively untracked. We met up with Fi and Jason and enjoyed some great off-piste in the fresh powder under blue skies and bright sun - though it remained very cold.

Après plus de 36 heures de la neige, Ian et moi sont allé à Guzet à midi. Il y a beaucoup de neige mais mauvaise visibilité. Nous sommes descendu deux pistes 'aveugle' puis nous avons décidé d'essayer Prat Mataou. Il y avait le même probleme, mais nous avons rencontré Laurent d'Oust. Il a nous montré des routes hors piste dans les arbres entre Prat et Col de la Trappe. Avec les arbres nous avons pu voir un peu et avons fait 4 descentes. Tout à coup, la brume part et il y avait le soleil! Nous sommes allé avec tout vitesse au secteur Guzet - dans la demi brume la hors piste apparait gigantesque! Nous avons rencontré Fi et Jason et ensemble nous avons aimé des belles descentes dans la poudreuse sous la grande bleu!

One of my neighbours - Fabien (who it has to be said is a bit accident prone) managed to roll her car a little way up the road from Quélébu yesterday. Fortunately no-one was hurt.

Une de mes voisines - Fabien (elle est sujet des accidents) a roulé sa voiture pres de Quélebu. Hereusement, elle est OK.

I spent much of this afternoon high up on Jon's roof, sitting astride the ridge, trying to unblock his chimney - alas without much luck. From there I could see the snow which is falling on the mountains slowly descending. Forecast is for another cold snowy spell until at least the weekend.

J'ai pris l'après midi sur le tôit de Jon, essayant de nettoyer sa cheminée - sans reussi. Dela j'ai pu voir la neige qui tomber sur les montagnes. On attends plus de neige ici jusqu'au le weekend.

The staircase I built for Rupert is now safely installed in the UK.

Pied de porc pané

The sweet smell of gently simmering pigs trotter (simmering as only a Rayburn can do) is permeating Quélébu - tomorrow it'll be de-boned and rolled in breadcrumbs...yum.

La belle arôme de pied de porc cuire à feu doux est dans Quélébu - demain je vais enlever les os et le rouler en chapelure.

This week has been very busy - split between designing and building another roof truss for Martin, painting at Pont de la Taule and starting to build replacement shutters for Annie's barn.

Cette semaine j'etais très occupé - Le dessin et la fabrication d'une ferme du toit pour Martin, de la peinture à Pont de la Taule et la fabrication des volets pour Annie.

Snow

About 5" of fresh snow here this morning with the snow still falling. So after feeding the sheep and re-erecting the chicken run which had collapsed under the weight of snow, a trip to Guzet was on the cards. It was just gone noon before Jason, Fi, Justin and I finally got on the snow. Only time for a few runs on Freychet before it was tracked out, but with deep, deep powder it was worth it. It snowed heavily all day but with the weekend crowds, chopped-up powder and poor visibility the quality of the skiing deteriorated through the day...but we now have a lot of snow on the mountains (2 metres or more at 2000m altitude) so once it stabilises we should have good ski-touring through to the spring.

À peu pres 12cm de la neige ici le matin, et la neige tombe encore. Donc après avoir donner le manger aux brebis et réperer la poulailler qui tomber avec la pese de la neige, je suis parti à Guzet. C'etais apr&egraves midi avant Jason, Fi, Justin et moi sont arrivé sur la neige. Seulement trois ou quatre descentes de Freychet avant toutes la pente sont tracés, mais avec la poudre profond quelles descentes! Il neigais toute la journée mais avec toutes le monde, la neige tracée et la brume, la qualité du ski se gâte...mais enfin il y a de la neige sur les montagnes (2m à 2000m) assez pour le ski de rando le printemps.

Pic de St Barthelemy (ski)

Snow fell overnight here and in the morning Ben and I headed over towards Ax-les-Thermes to make a ski ascent of Pic de St Barthelemy. We started high above Luzenac at 1280m and were able ski straight from the car. At first it was still snowing, but soon we climbed through the clouds and emerged into the sunshine. It took a little over 3 hours to make the 1200m (4000ft) of ascent via the South ridge. The ridge had been battered by the wind and it looked like the ski down was going to be horrible, but just before the summit we got views down the South West face which was in beautiful condition.

De la neige, la nuit dernière et le matin Ben et moi sommes allé à Ax-les-Thermes de faire l'ascension de Pic de Barthelemy. Nous avons parti bien au dessus Luzenac à 1280m skis aux pieds. D'abord il neigais, mais tôt nous avons monté au dessus les nuages et sont arrivé au soliel. Il prends trois heures de faire le 1200m de dénivilée du arête Sud. L'arête a été venté at nous pensions que la descente sera "difficile", mais juste avant le sommet nous avons vu la face Sud-Ouest bien fourné avec la neige poudreuse.

The views from the summit were immense as was the ski down...glorious.

Predator

Lost a chicken yesterday evening to a fox. Tonight the cockerel and two hens have decided to roost in the barn with the sheep, whilst the two other remaining hens are roosting in the chicken coop. Meanwhile, I'm standing guard at dawn and dusk.

Hier, un renard a pris une poule. Ce soir le coq et deux poules dorment dans la grange avec les brebis, les deux autres poules décident de rester dans la poulailler. À la même temp, je mont la guard!

Yesterday a day's skiing at Guzet with hard icy conditions. I spent the afternoon skiing with Sandrine and trying to improve Saskia's skiing.

Hier j'ai pris une journée à Guzet sur la neige compacte et gélée. L'après-midi j'ai fait du ski avec Sandrine et ses filles.

In the evening Ben came over and we spent most the night mounting Dynafit bindings he'd been given, on my old touring skis. We borrowed Ian's avalanche beacon and set off in the morning for his first ski-tour. We nipped up Pic des Lanes in about 1hr30mins and had a great ski down on slightly icy, wind blown snow but with just enough loose snow on the top to make it enjoyable to ski. Movie below, not much of a story to this one, just having fun (click on the image to view).

Le soir, Ben est arrivé et nous avons pris le plus part de la nuit montant les fixations dynafit sur mes vieux skis de rando pour lui. Nous avons emprunté l'ARVA de Ian et nous sommes parti le matin à faire le première tour pour Ben. Nous avons fait l'ascension de Pic des Lanes (1hr30) et avons fait une bonne descente sur la neige un peu gélée, un peu cartonnée mais avec une fine pelicule de neige qui avons fait l'ensemble agréable à skier. A quiet day

Rain here most of the day, but things have brightened up late this afternoon. Hopefully a little more snow overnight at Guzet. Looks like it'll turn cooler next week but the snowfall seems to be remaining in Northern Europe. A quiet day servicing my old touring skis, which I'm giving to a Ben, prior to mounting bindings tomorrow.

Il a plu ici le plus part de la journée, mais maintenant il améliore. J'esp&egravere qu'il tombera un peu de la neige à Guzet dans la nuit. On attends le temps plus froid semaine prochaine, mais la précipitation reste dans le Nord. Une journée calme ici réparant mes vieux skis de rando, je les donnerais à Ben demain.

Waxing

The fœhn wind is gently blowing and the avalanche risk is at 4, so no ski-touring just yet. Still, the skis are waxed and work at Pont de la Taule has restarted.

Le fœhn soufle doucement et le BRA est 4, donc pas de ski de rando. Enfin, mes skis sont fartés et les travaux à Pont de la Taule avons recommencé.

Self-portrait with bacon

I rarely, if ever, take pictures of myself...which is a shame as I now realise that there are long periods of my life without any record at all of what I looked like. I find it hard to take a photo of myself without scowling or looking stern, perhaps it's the concentration? Anyhow here's one for the record...

Je prends rarement voire jamais les photos de moi...dommage parce que il y a des périodes dans ma vie sans record. Moi, je le trouve difficile de prendre un autoportrait sans faisant un air renfrogné, peut-être c'est la concentration? Donc voila!

Tasted some of my brine cured bacon today for the first time...delicious and not at all salty.

J'ai gouté des tranches de la poitrine que j'ai fait aujourd'hui...delicieux et pas trop salées.
