Remington Model Seven - Mark II
The new laminated stock I've been working on is now in the long slow process of final finishing (tung/linseed oil mix). One coat a week for a month, one coat a month for a year...of course I can use it in the meantime! It's amazing how the new stock has changed the feel and balance of the rifle (for the better) and puts my eye instantly behind the scope when I shoulder it.
After a few weeks of sunny balmy weather, things are beginning to change today, even a chance of snow here on Monday night.

Update
On Friday I collected the ram "Rambo". He was instantly mobbed by the sheep who had never seen a "male" sheep before. After some getting to know you stuff, he's busy doing what Rams do.
Three good sized boar hunting on Saturday (not shot by me though). By the end of the day I was feeling like I was going down with flu - but I have had very inflamed sinuses for the last week because of all the dust and lime mortar mixing at Pont de la Taule, anyhow decided to stay in the warm on Sunday just in case. I started work on the laminated stock for my rifle (the blank for which finally arrived a few days ago, 7 months after I ordered it!). A couple of days of shaping later and it's ready for the action to be glass bedded. Several weeks of sanding and finishing will follow that.

Trois Seigneurs
A walk up Pic des Trois Seigneurs today with Ben. He moved here a couple of months ago and is in the process of buying a small farm near Foix. Still quite a lot of snow on the East facing slopes above the Etang d'Arbu (waist deep in places) and snowshoes would have been useful. Return via the Pic de Barrès and Pic de Fontanette which are mostly clear of snow.

Autumn
Tractor day
Another balmy hot day without a cloud in the sky. People here say that the weather on the 16th Nov is an indication of the coming winter...well today it was 34 degrees in the sun...glad I got a ski in last week.
Then several other tractors turned up - the son of La Pancharde to cut the field in front of the house, M Larcher to cut the grass beside the house and then Le Suisse on his two wheel tractor with ride on trailer to cut down some trees for John.
This morning I serviced the brakes on the tractor which have always seemed a bit dodgy. The brakes shoes on the first wheel were perfect but when I looked inside the second brake drum it was packed with grease!! Took a while to clean it all out but not surprisingly the brakes are fine now.

In the afternoon, I fitted some doors to the barn and cut Mini's ingrowing horn. Then I washed the fleeces from the sheep shearing last spring - they'll need to be carded during the winter.

Hunting
5 wild boar shot today! But all is not well in the hunting club and no sooner had the wild boar arrived at the hunting lodge than they were expelled with those who shot them. Hopefully it's a storm that'll blow over.

After the snow, torrential rain and now warm weather again. Some more work at Pont de la Taule (quite enjoying pointing stonework now) and this morning I decided to take Ziggy to the vet. She's been scratching her face for several weeks and managed to pick up an infection. The old sheep transporter fell to pieces last summer (it was hastily put together when Una ran into a pitchfork a few years ago). So this morning I built version II out of bits of timber, tin and chicken wire left over from previous projects.

A brief break in the weather, so thought I'd get a quick ski tour in to look at the 1m 40 cm of snow that has fallen at the Port d'Aula automatic weather station. The road was impassable at about 1180m so skied from there. Headed towards Cour Vic but the weather closed in when I reached about 2000m so headed for home....where it was snowing too. Very changeable snow conditions and bit heavy below 1500m. Video below (click on image), sorry about poor film quality for the descent, horrible flat light and snow storm.

Mission accomplished
Having fired the Rayburn up, I remembered that one of the jobs on my list was to move a radiator from upstairs to downstairs. Since the thatching, upstairs has been too warm with two radiators, whereas downstairs could do with a bit more heat input to speed up the warming process, particularly if I've been out all day and don't light the Rayburn until five or six. Sounds a simple job but it's actually quite a job.
I had to get a few plumbing bits from St G in the morning then it was a race to see if I could get the job done before the evening. No sooner had I drained the system and cut the first pipe than the power went off. Every time the wind blows here a tree falls over - usually on the power lines. The rest of the job had to be done by candlelight. First flurries of snow this afternoon!
Anyhow, I won't bore you with the details, but 7 hours later I'm finished and as I'm refilling the system the power comes back on - perfect. Power means the central heating pump works so I can fire up the Rayburn again for a test. All works well, plus I have more wall space upstairs to spread out the furniture, guitars, etc.

Winter is coming
Shaping up nicely.
One of the things I love about winter is having the Rayburn back on line. Yum!!
Miam!

Snow?
With snow continuing to fall in the mountains for at least the coming week and a chance of the first snow of the winter here at Quelebu on Monday night, the Rayburn got a clean tonight ready for firing up in the coming days. Have resisted waxing the skis, don't want to tempt fate!
5 days of pointing completed at Pont de la Taule and about another 3 to go before the pointing on the ground and first floors are complete. Hope to collect a ram for the sheep in the coming days.

Climbing at Calames
Hunting Saturday and climbing Sunday.
I haven't climbed at all this year due to other commitments, so it was good to climb again. After breakfasting with Justin, Emily and the twins, I headed off to Calames with Patrick to rendezvous with Donna and a handful of other climbers from the other side of the Col de Port. Some nice routes at 5b and 5a+ made for an enjoyable day.
In the evening Donna played hostess and about 30 of us sat outside eating around a little fire. 4 of us had brought guitars and provided an improvised band. It was a great "jam". I don't often play with other musicians but it was really enjoyable and the audience was appreciative too.
At midnight the first few drops of rain started to fall and we bid a hasty retreat, a storm had soon arrived and the rain and wind stripped the trees of their leaves. The journey home was through a thick orange carpet of leaves, barely any tarmac visible on the road.
It's cold today with snow on the mountains again. All this week I'm pointing and plastering at Pont de la Taule again.
